lay a little egg for me...

I have always wanted chickens, ever since I watched the 'Good Life' on TV as a child. I have even bought many beautiful 'how to keep chicken' books! With a small garden and two young children, I thought my dream wouldn't be possible, but after watching Alys Fowler's fantastic 'Edible Garden' TV series, and seeing her 'garden loft' chicken run, I am thinking we may just be able to fit a couple in, after all. A little creativity may be needed to move things around a little to squeeze two hens in, with enough space for them, but it may, just may, be possible! Do you keep hens? Do you have any chicken advice? I would love to hear from you...

  2. I have 3 chickens, and my advice is get some!! You'll love them. They're really easy and so interesting; the eggs are just a bonus.

  3. We have 3 chickens (easter gifts to the kids 2 years ago) in a town garden in Dorset. They are brilliant pets, they don't peck, you can pick them up and cuddle them, they make contented noises and eat loads of food waste (they love noodles!). Only issues have been leg mites once (easily solved) and they go broody and we feel sorry for them quite often. As Lise said the eggs are a bonus but also great for bartering (I swap them for venison!) or as gifts when you visit people. Ours are sussex hybrids which are big and healthy - some breeds are definitely better with people/kids than others. Rescue chickens are also worth the effort. You will not regret getting them I promise!

  5. We live in the suburbs and have 4 chickens - definately enough to keep a family of four with eggs for the week. I'd recommend them to anyone - they really are a joy to have and my two children adore them. They love to collect the eggs! You won't regret it.

  6. We have chickens and they are really great. They are good pets for the children because they are responsive when the children want to hold them but do not pine if they don't get any attention. They are also really good company in the garden. I would highly recommend them.

  7. I would like chickens too, but we have a family dog and decided the two wouldn't go well together. One day though. I'd like a chicken run around the perimeter of the back fence.
